SHERIDAN - The Riverton Lady Wolverines girls soccer team saw its season come to an end on Friday morning with a 1-0 loss to the Powell Lady Panthers at the Class 3-A state soccer tournament at the Big Horn Equestrian Center in Sheridan.
Powell senior Kayla Atkinson scored the game's only goal in the 38th minute.
"We had (yesterday's match against Lander) won, but they scored in the last 40 seconds -- that was mentally tough on players and coaches," said Lady Panthers head coach Jack Haire, noting this was Powell's first-ever win at a state soccer tournament. "But, we wanted this one today."
Riverton's best chance to get back in the match came in the 47th minute, when freshman Alexxis Motisi broke through the middle of Powell's defense and found herself one-on-one against goalkeeper Melynda Davison, but could not finish.
"We gave it everything we had and I'm proud of you," Riverton head coach Tanya Santee told her team after the match.
Powell advances in consolation play and will challenge Star Valley on Saturday. The Lady Braves beat Rawlins 3-0 on Friday.
Cody was set to play Lander and Buffalo was scheduled to take on Worland in the two state semifinal matches on Friday afternoon.
