Wolverines fall to Braves in consolation final

Riverton dropped a 4-1 decision to Star Valley in its final soccer match of the season.

SHERIDAN -- A final-day win at the state tournament was not in the cards for the Riverton High School boys soccer team, as Star Valley, playing with more desire and intensity, dominated the Wolverines, 4-1, Saturday in consolation- bracket play at the Big Horn Equestrian Center.

The loss capped a lackluster state tournament for the Wolverines, who entered the final weekend of play ranked second in statewide media polling.

The Wolverines fell 1-0 to Worland to open the tournament, beat Buffalo 4-3 in overtime on Friday, before falling to Star Valley, which Riverton had tied on the road and defeated at home 2-0 earlier this season.

"We had some growing pains going to 3-A," said Riverton head coach Aziz Waheed. "I think the players thought a classification change meant walking through, and our accomplishments from a year ago meant just having to show up."

In Saturday's match dominated by the Braves -- Star Valley outshot Riverton 21-8 -- Kevin Schmidt netted Riverton's only goal, a penalty kick in the 62nd minute, which made the score 3-1 at the time.

Noah Hutchinson scored twice, and Gerson Lozano also scored for the Braves.

"I really think we peaked at Cody (a 3-0 Riverton win on April 29)," said Waheed. "We played incredibly well, but we regressed since Cody."

Cody upset Lander, 1-0, on Friday, then defeated Torrington, 1-0, in the championship game on Saturday for the fourth state title in school history.
