Mrs. Petro - 1998

May 28, 2017 - From files

Winifred Petro spent 31 years on the faculty at St. Stephen's Indian School. That's a good long career.

And she already had been teaching 23 years elsewhere in Fremont County before she ever got to St. Stephen's.

It added up to 54 years in local education. At the end of May 1998, she was retiring at age 77.

Educated at the University of Iowa, Petro came west for a job at the old Fremont County Vocational High School (now Lander Valley) to start her teaching career. When she moved to St. Stephen's in 1967 after a few years off with her young children, it was still a Catholic mission high school operated by Jesuit priests. She had taught high school in Lander, but the St. Stephen's job was for pre-school kids.

"I said (to Father Flanigan, the principal) that I was a high school teacher and didn't know if I was qualified," she said. "Father Flanigan said 'You have five children. You're qualified.'"
