Sara Wiles started shooting pictures of ordinary people in the 1970s. A quarter-century later, her career had brought her to Lander, her home base for a productive period photographing the people of the Wind River Indian Reservation.

Her specialty was black-and-white photographs, and a new exhibit of her pictures was about to go on display at Central Wyoming College in the second week of June 1998.

Although she shot some powwow photos and other ceremonies, Wiles said she preferred seeing her subjects in ordinary, less-flashy settings. Her work was supported largely through grant funding, and she declined an profits from the pictures, often making prints for her subjects, free of charge.

Her exhibit at CWC was titled "Ni'iihi: In a Good Way," showcasing pictures shot from 1976 to 1996.
