Five-victim car wreck raises fatality total in county to 11, far ahead of 2016 pace

Jun 16, 2017 - By Katie Roenigk, Staff Writer

The quintuple-fatal traffic incident that took place June 3 south of Riverton brought the tally of fatalities for the year in Fremont County to 11, Fremont County Coroner Mark Stratmoen said Thursday.

By comparison, he said, there were 14 fatalities - or unnatural deaths due to accident or homicide - for the entire year in 2016.

"So we are way ahead," Stratmoen said. "And we aren't even halfway through the year yet.

"Compared to last year it's not looking good."

All 11 fatalities this year were related to drug or alcohol use, he continued. All five of the June 3 victims were determined to be substance-related deaths.

Six of the fatalities were determined to be motor vehicle homicides, and five were accidental.

Nine involved motor vehicle incidents wherein a majority of the deceased were not wearing seatbelts - or helmets, in the case of two motorcycle fatalities that took place last month in Riverton.

"The lack of use of safety devices certainly has an effect on survivability," Stratmoen said.

"We can't emphasize too much - and it's not like it hasn't been emphasized a lot - wear your seatbelt.

"Wear your helmet. And don't be intoxicated and driving. "
