Raiders split road pair with Rawlins

Jun 25, 2017 - By Scott Akanewich, Sports Editor

Cody Frazier drove in five runs, while teammate Brodie Roden homered in a 28-7 rout of the Generals.

Saying the Riverton Raider bats have been on fire as of late is an understatement along the lines of saying the Titanic hit an ice cube in the Atlantic.

For the second time in three days, the Raiders put a scoreline more suited for a gridiron than a diamond on the board in a 28-7 road victory in the second game of a doubleheader at Rawlins on Saturday.

An 11-run fourth inning was the hammer blow in a 21-hit assault over only five innings before the game ended via the 10-run rule.

Brodie Roden, Cody Frazier, Alex Fabricus and Dillon Fabricus all had three hits apiece, as Frazier and Roden each drove in five runs.

Roden also homered for the third time in four games, giving him a squad-leading nine on the season, while Frazier chased home five for the second game in three contests.

Brock Hinkle also drove in four runs on the afternoon.

According to Riverton manager Troy Brown, his club made the proper adjustments when opposing pitching changes were made.

"At first, they had a kid who was throwing pretty hard, but we were hitting him good," said Brown. "Next, they brought in a slower pitcher, but we did what we had to do and continued hitting, unlike in the first game when we had some problems adjusting to different pitchers."

Kyren Higgs and Alex Fabricus combined for the victory on the mound, with Fabricus hurling a scoreless frame in the fifth, including a pair of strikeouts.

Rawlins 9, Riverton 7

In the first game, the Raiders could only manage a touchdown to the Outlaws' three field goals during a 9-7 loss in another contest resembling a football game.

After Alex Fabricus had driven home Frazier with a first-inning double, the Outlaws responded in the bottom half with four runs for a 4-1 lead.

In the top of the third, Higgs doubled in Roden, who had led off with a single, then scored himself on an Alex Fabricus base hit, closing the score to 4-3.

However, that was as close as the Raiders would get, as Rawlins put up three more of their own in the bottom of the third.

Brown credited the Generals for an aggressive approach at the plate.

"Rawlins came out swinging the bats," he said. "They hit the ball well."

Riverton (19-11, 6-4 A West) will next face conference leaders Cody in a road doubleheader on Sunday.

Despite losing four of their last six heading into the showdown with the Cubs, Brown isn't concerned with the state of his club, he said.

"I'm not worried," said Brown. "Because I know how good a team we have."
