Jun 27, 2017 - From staff reportsConstruction has been completed for the new 1,250 foot section of canal for the Riverton Valley Irrigation District.
However, the continuing high volume of water has prevented crews from opening up water-flow until the flooding near the district's head gate is controlled.
The next hurdle is to tie in this section with the existing canal, which is several feet lower in elevation due to the scouring effect of the rushing water during this month's flooding.
Loren Smith, superintendent of the State Engineer's Office in Riverton, has held talked with representatives from the Bureau of Reclamation, convincing them to reduce outflow at Bull Lake by 1,500 cubic feet per second.
RVID is hoping that decision could stop flooding at the head gate and allow for quick completion of a dike meant to force floodwaters back to the main channel.
On Sunday, culverts were installed where a newly built road was intentionally breached to reduce water-flow in the canal that destroyed a bridge on Quartz Road a week ago.
The culverts will continue to bleed off the excess water above the new bridge, while allowing construction to resume on the north end of the dike. The first on-the-ground inspection of the dike found it to be intact.
Monday, belly dump tractor-trailers from 2M began hauling gravel again to complete the north end of the dike. The dike needs to be extended another 500 feet.
A temporary head gate is being prepared for installation at the site of the diversion.
Floodwaters receded over the weekend, and all major rivers and streams are slowing after flowing near or above flood stage for much of June.
