Raiders B squad takes pair from Cats

Riverton defeated Douglas in both ends of a road doubleheader.

The Riverton Raiders American Legion baseball B squad faced the Douglas Cats second team Wednesday, and it was the home side that found itself being played like a mouse backed into a corner.

Aquilo Friday and Dillon Lange both put on solid pitching performances as the Raiders won both ends of the doubleheader in Douglas by scores of 12-7 and 10-2.

In the opener, Friday was victimized by errors, with only one of the six runs he allowed being of the earned variety. He had seven strikeouts in a five-inning stint which spanned 94 pitches.

Riverton got out to an early lead in the top of the first, thanks to doubles by Jereko Martinez and Mason Lucas, posting a quick 2-0 advantage before the home side even swung a bat.

In the home half of the first, the Cats came right back with three markers of their own for a 3-2 lead after the opening frame.

Each club chased home a run in the second, and the game entered the fourth inning with Douglas ahead by a score of 4-3.

In the top of the fourth, the younger Raiders channeled their senior squad brothers with an offensive explosion the likes of which the A side has become known for this season.

Lange began the assault with a base hit, followed by a Kendric Muehler bunt single, with both runners moving up a base on a Douglas misplay, leaving men on second and third with no spouts for Martinez, who was then hit by a pitch to load the bases.

At that point, the Raiders could have simply put their bats away, as they were the beneficiaries of a bases-loaded free pass to Brock Hinkle to force in a run, followed by four straight hit batters, with Beau Saindon, Friday, Trey Draper and Lange all taking one for the team.

The result was a five-run frame on only a pair of hits, which effectively killed the game off.

Martinez took over on the mound from Friday to begin the sixth inning and closed out the Cats with four strikeouts over the final two innings.

Friday, Lucas and Martinez were all 2-for-4 with a pair of runs batted in on the game.

Riverton 10, Douglas 2

In the nightcap, the Raiders kept scoring runs off Douglas misadventures in a 10-2 victory which saw Riverton only get four hits.

However, hits don't matter when the opposition serves up six errors, 14 bases-on-balls and two hit batters, which is exactly what Douglas did across the seven innings of play.

Lange had no such problems retiring hitters for the Raiders, going 6 1/3 innings and striking out 11 on 102 pitches, before Damon DeVries relieved and got the final two outs of the contest.

Martinez was the only Raider with a multiple-hit effort, going 2-for-3 with three runs scored and another batted in.

Riverton's B unit moved to 10-9 on the season.
