Raiders head for Big Sky Country

Jul 6, 2017 - By Scott Akanewich, Sports Editor

Riverton will play in an American Legion tournament in Billings this weekend.

Riverton's American Legion baseball club is heading north for a tournament in Billings, Montana and it's only fitting the Raiders will be plying their skills in Big Sky Country with the prolific rate they've been hitting big flies this season.

So far, Riverton has sent 15 home runs out of various parks on the current campaign, with Brodie Roden leading the way with a team-leading seven.

In all, five different Raiders have left the yard, including Alex Fabricus (4), Kyren Higgs (2), Cody Frazier (1) and Dillon Lange (1) in addition to Roden's blasts from the leadoff spot.

However, it's not all about power, as Riverton carries a robust .369 team batting average and has shown the ability to manufacture runs when the power bats have an outage without their run production dropping off.

For example, after Alex Fabricus' squad-leading 36 runs batted in, Cody Frazier is second on the club with 31, followed by Dillon Fabricus, who has contributed 30 to the cause despite the duo combining for only one home run.

Riverton is averaging 8.5 runs per game as a result of their high-powered offense.

Extra-base hits which stay in the park haven't been an issue either, as Alex Fabricus has 12 doubles, while Roden has added 11 and Frazier has three triples.

On the mound, the Raiders have posted a 4.41 team earned-run average, which might not seem too impressive on the surface, but considering the amount of runs the offense provides in support of their hurlers, it's been plenty good enough.

Dalton Baldes has led the way, as the big right-hander has a 6-1 record with a 2.44 ERA and 60 strikeouts in 54 1/3 innings, while Matt Fisher has solidified himself as a solid No. 2 with a 5-3 mark and a 3.68 ERA.

Along with his prodigious power at the top of the order, Roden has gone 4-2 with a 3.05 ERA, while Dillon Fabricus has also won two games on the mound, with single victories from Dalton Lassiter, Lange, Higgs and Jereko Martinez.

Riverton (22-13, 8-6 A West) will open pool play in Billings on Thursday against Lovell, followed by contests against Green River on Friday, then Bozeman, Montana and the Billings Halos on Saturday.

On Sunday, teams from opposite pools will play each other depending on their respective finishes.

Following the tourney, the Raiders will return home to host Sheridan in a nonconference doubleheader on Tuesday.
