Riverton all-stars reach title game

Jul 9, 2017 - By Scott Akanewich, Sports Editor

The home team lost a rematch against Worland in the final, 14-7 in the championship game of the Battle at the Winds.

On Friday, the Riverton 12-and-under all-stars suffered a bitter defeat to Worland in pool play of the Lee Martinez Memorial Battle at the Winds baseball tournament at Saban Complex in Riverton.

The 12-5 loss came of the heels of a pair of victories earlier in the day, against Powell, 15-7 and Rock Springs, 10-6.

Still, the Rivrton stars were relegated to the loser's bracket and faced an uphill battle to reach the championship game, with perennial power Cody standing in the way as the opposition in an elimination contest on Saturday morning -- and they defeated their archrivals by a score of 10-6.

Riverton struck with five runs in the third inning on the strength of three-run homer off the bat of Garrett Raymond starting off the scoring, before Hunter Hauck and Dallon Draper both singled and scored, to take a 5-1 lead after three innings.

Cody scored four runs over the next two innings, and it was a 5-5 game after five.

But, in the sixth inning Dale scored the tie-breaking run after a single, then his teammates added another four unanswered markers for the final margin.

Worland 14, Riverton 7

Riverton got on the board quickly with a run in the first after Brodie Dale reached base safely and came around to score.

However, despite putting up three runs in each of the next two innings, it wasn't enough in a 14-7 defeat.

The game was even at 4-4 after two innings but Worland proved too strong, scoring 10 runs over the final three frames for the win.

Dallon Draper and Derrick DeVries each had a pair of hits in defeat.

Riverton 15, Powell 7

In Friday morning's opener of what was a tripleheader of action for the home side, Riverton opened the tournament against Powell.

With the major league all-star home run derby slated for Monday in Miami, the Riverton nine got an early jump on their big-league counterparts, launching four balls over the fence in a 15-7 victory.

Nathan Hutchison put on a particularly powerful performance, hitting a pair in his first two plate appearances, including a tag-team, back-to-back effort with teammate Uriah Hines in the first inning.

Taylor Stevens also got in on the act, bombing a long ball of his own in the fourth frame.

In fact, Riverton scored in every inning until the game was called due to a tournament-imposed time limit, as Powell never recovered from the shellshock of the opening inning.

Draper added a pair of doubles, along with two-baggers by Hutchison, Hines and Garrett Raymond as part of an impressive 19-hit attack.

Riverton 10, Rock Springs 6

In Friday's middle game, Riverton's bats were once again potent in a 10-6 assault against Rock Springs.

No homers for the home team in this one, but still plenty of balls being banged around the park.

Wyatt Frazier was the ringleader on the day, with a pair of hits, with contributions also coming off the bats of Dale, Christopher Reinig, Hines, Raymond, Hunter Hauck and DeVries.

However, unlike in the opener, Riverton waited until the second inning to unleash their offense.

Dale led off with a single, followed by Reinig reaching on an error, then bases-on-balls to Hines, Hauck and Draper, leaving DeVries an opportunity to drive in runs with men in scoring position, which he did with a base hit, making the score 3-0.

Riverton added another pair of runs in the third, which were answered by three Rock Springs markers in the fourth to make it 5-3 on a three-run homer by Aiden Walker.

But, Riverton quickly quashed any hope of a fightback for the visitors, piling on five runs in their half of the fourth, ultimately leading to the final margin of victory.

Worland 12, Riverton 5

In Friday's finale, Riverton faced a pair of familiar faces wearing the orange of Worland in starting pitcher Sean Dean Brown and right fielder Dawsen Valerio, in a 12-5 defeat to the visitors from the north.

The opening frame was scoreless, as both sides went down quietly in order.

However, after Draper had driven home Raymond with an RBI single in the top of the second for a 1-0 advantage, the Worland offense exploded for six runs in the bottom of the frame.

Riverton answered with three runs in the top of the third, highlighted by a Raymond double which plated a pair and an RBI groundout by Hauck to make it 6-3, but that was as close as they would get, as Worland went on to score six more runs over the next two innings to secure victory.
