Jul 13, 2017 - By Scott Akanewich, Sports EditorA close game in the opener of a doubleheader was blown open late by the visitors.
For five innings of the Riverton Raiders B squad's opener of a doubleheader against Cody, the home club not only stayed with the visitors, but carried a 6-5 lead into the sixth inning.
However, the Cubs offense exploded for a pair of four-run frames in the final two innings for a 13-6 victory at Roy Peck Field.
Following a win by their A squad brethren over their longtime rivals to the north earlier in the season, it initially seemed as if the junior side would follow suit.
Kendrick Muehler began with a line-drive single in the bottom of the first, then scored on a Cody Frazier double for a quick 1-0 advantage.
Mason Lucas then drew a walk before Brock Hinkle delivered a fielder's choice to plate Frazier, and it was 2-0.
Lucas started the game on the mound for the Raiders. After he put a goose egg on the board in the first, the Cubs to even the score in the second.
Riverton came back with another pair in the bottom half, as Beau Saindon singled to open the inning and scored on a Dillon Fabricus triple to restore the Raiders' lead.
Dillon Lange drove Fabricus home, and it was 4-2 in favor of the home side before Muehler was thrown out at second on a stolen base attempt to end the inning.
Lucas put up another scoreless frame in the third, only for Frazier to single and score on a Hinkle triple in the bottom of the inning. Riverton added another marker in the fourth when Saindon scored on a Jaren Draper grounder.
That was all the offense on the afternoon for Riverton, as the bats went silent the rest of the way. Cody's came alive, posting a pair of four-run frames in the final two innings for the victory.
Muehler, Saindon, Frazier and Fabricus all contributed a pair of hits apiece as part of a 12-hit Riverton attack.
Cody 16, Riverton 6
In the second game, Cody put six runs on the board in the first and never looked back in a 16-6 victory to sweep the doubleheader from the hosts.
Fabricus was the only Riverton player to have a multi-hit game, going 2-for-3, while Frazier doubled and scored two runs. Jereko Martinez added a pair of runs batted in.
Riverton (9-12) will next play in the B state tournament in Rock Springs on July 17-22.
