Cowboys put game away with 19-5 run in 67-60 win over Southern to end tourney

Nov 18, 2012 - The Associated Press

LARAMIE -- The University of Wyoming Cowboys needed something - anything - to get going late in the second half on Friday against Southern.

The Cowboys trailed the Jaguars and the team's first loss looked like a real possibility.

Then sophomore guard Riley Grabau calmly stepped up and nailed a deep 3-pointer with 5:52 to go. It was the spark the Cowboys needed.

Grabau's 3 started a game-ending 19-5 run by the Cowboys for a 67-60 win in the finale of the Global Sports Hoops Showcase before a crowd of 5,019 at the Arena-Auditorium.

The Cowboys (4-0) went 3-0 in the round-robin tournament, the only team to finish the tourney undefeated.

"It was a team effort and it was Leonard (Washington) that got us all together and just said, 'Hey, we talk about this all the time, facing adversity,'" Larry Nance Jr. said. "We did it. We definitely took on what they had to offer and got through it."

UW struggled most of the way against the Jaguars (1-4). Southern - playing its fifth game on a week-long road trip that started with games at Iowa State and Nebraska before coming to Laramie - led for most of the first half.

Wyoming opened the second half with a quick 7-3 run and led 36-31 on a Derrious Gilmore 3-pointer with 15:40 left.

But Southern used a 15-2 run for a 46-38 lead with 10:29 to go. The Jaguars still led 55-48 with 6:17 to play when Grabau - Wyoming's most consistent player this season - changed the momentum with his big 3-pointer.

Larry Nance Jr. followed the 3-pointer with dunk, then Luke Martinez hit a 3 of his own (his first after four straight misses) and the game was tied 56-56 with 3:54 to go.

Southern took its last lead at 58-56 on a hoop by Jameel Grace on the Jaguars' next possession, but two free throws apiece by tournament MVP Leonard Washington and Martinez gave UW the lead for good at 60-58. Martinez then followed with another 3-pointer and the game was over.

Grabau and Nance sealed with win with two free throws apiece over the final 24 seconds.

Washington finished with a game-high 17 points and added eight rebounds and three assists.
