SHS boys hope for quality over quantity on hardwood

Nov 29, 2012 - By Randy Tucker, Sports Writer

The switch has taken place at Shoshoni High School, and the Wrangler boys have former girls coach Dan Martin taking the helm this season. Martin is a venerable coach with decades of experience in South Dakota who brings his intense defensive game to the boys this season.

The Wranglers compete in the toughest region in Class 2-A, with defending state champion Wyoming Indian poised for another run and talented Lovell anchoring the Northwest 2-A conference.

The season will be challenging early.

Shoshoni has just three seniors in Josh Thoren, Casey LaGois and Micah Mills, and only 13 total players out. The Wrangler wrestling team took big numbers this season.

In spite of the small numbers Shoshoni has one of the fastest team in the division and will have to rely on that quickness as the season develops.

The Wranglers have size as well in the 6-4 Thoren and 6-3 junior Brace Pingetzer. Junior Nathaniel Lutz brings size and power to the post.

Shoshoni's quickness comes with junior guards Lawry Johnson and Mason Steffen, along with Mills.

Martin is assisted by former St. Stephen's head coach Brady Slack and by Bryce McIntosh.

The plan is to hold seven players for varsity action this season and play six at the junior varsity level. Fielding a junior varsity team for every game could be a challenge if injury or ineligibility depletes the roster.

Shoshoni opens play in the Big Horn Basin tournament this weekend with games against Riverside, Greybull and Burlington.
