Wrangler grapplers 3-2 at home duals

Dec 11, 2012 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports Editor

Lovell won the team title with a 5-0 record.

Shoshoni High School placed fourth out of 11 wrestling teams Saturday at the Zach Parish Duals in Shoshoni.

The Wranglers lost a close decision to the Worland junior varsity team in pool play to be eliminated from a spot in the title match.

The Lovell Bulldogs won the title, posting a 5-0 record. Worland was second at 4-1. Lyman came in third with a 4-1 mark. Shoshoni ended the event going 3-2.

The teams were divided into two different pools to start the day. The two winners squared in the title match.

"For as young as we are, we did OK," Shoshoni coach Tony Truempler said. "We had one letdown against Worland. That kind of put us in position that we didn't really want to be in. We had a couple of guys who didn't make weight that hurt us a little bit."

SHS also lost to Lyman in the dual tournament.

The Bulldogs are considered one of the favorites to compete for the Class 2-A state title at the end of the season.

SHS doesn't have any seniors out for the year.

"I would have really liked to have a chance at Lovell," Truempler said. "I think that we would have done well in the lower weights. Then Lovell would pretty much dominate us in the upper weights."

Wind River, Wyoming Indian and Dubois were the other Fremont County teams in the field.

"There were a couple of smaller teams in the field because a couple of kids got sick," Truempler said.

Dubois had five wrestlers in the tournament. Big Piney managed to bring only four.

The five Dubois wrestlers were John Bartlett, Mat Rohovie, Rowan Hawk, Sterling Baker and Cody Flynn.

SHS matches

Shoshoni High School junior Danny Huxtable had a perfect day in his weight class.

Huxtable went 4-0 in the 126-pound weight class. Huxtable was the only SHS wrestler to go undefeated in his home duals.

"Danny had a complete turnaround from the Powell tournament," Truempler said. "He was ready to wrestle."

Truempler said junior Alex Minge had a strong tournament for the Wranglers at 170 pounds.

Freshman heavyweight wrestlers Patrick Forrester produced a 2-2 record in the duals.

One of the matches was a loss to senior Dubois wrestler Cody Flynn, a top-ranked wrestler in his weight class. Flynn should compete for the state title in a couple of months at the state tournament in Casper.

"Patrick gave Cody all that he wanted," Truempler said. "Everybody won some matches."

SHS competes Saturday in the Wright dual tournament.

"For as many as new kids that we have that have never done it before, we are doing pretty well," Truempler said. "There are a couple of little things that we need to work on. It's a big change from middle school for some of these guys."

The duals will feature a number of Class 2-A teams from the east side of the state.
