Auto glass repair shop opens in Riverton

Dec 13, 2012 - By Katie Roenigk, Staff Writer

Owner said he has worked in the industry for about 20 years and wanted to venture out on his own.

Mike Hegwood is the newest business owner on a block of North Federal Boulevard that seems designated for car repair services.

All-Star Auto Glass, 1116 N. Federal Blvd., is located between Page's Muffler Shop and X Tra Care Vehicle Repair and across from Plains Tire Co. Hegwood said he thinks the location should be good for business, especially since he has known his neighbors for years.

"I went to school with both these guys," he said of the nearby business owners. "We went through high school together."

Now, he says, the men share advice and recommend one another to customers when the opportunity arises. Hegwood said business has been slow so far, but he is on track to meet his start-up goals.

"I think I'm on track for where I want to be," he said. "I didn't expect to jump out and be way busy."

He said he has been occupied enough getting everything up and running before and after All-Star opened in mid-November.

"Computer set-up was stressful that first week, getting all that done," Hegwood said. "And a friend of mine ... is coming down this weekend to help me get the credit card machine hopefully set up."

He specializes in auto glass repair, but Hegwood said he also will fix small engines for equipment like lawn mowers, generators, snow blowers and lawn tractors.

"I've done automotive stuff for probably the last 20 years," the Riverton native said. "I just wanted to venture out on my own."

He said he had been thinking about starting his own business for several months when he finally decided to "jump in" this fall. It helped that he had the support of his wife Jennifer, who seemed less nervous about the transition than he did.

"I was a wreck," Hegwood said.

So far, though, he has liked being the boss of his own family operated business, and he has enjoyed meeting new friends and clients.

"I'm able to give it a personal touch," Hegwood said.

He doesn't have any employees yet, but he has plans for the future --for example, Hegwood said a mobile office would be beneficial for clients who drive tractor-trailer combinations.

"It's hard to bring a big semi back here and pull that in (to the garage)," Hegwood said.
