Jan 8, 2013 - By Katie Roenigk, Staff WriterThousands of Rocky Mountain Power customers went without electricity for almost an hour Tuesday after a vehicle struck a power pole on Sunset Drive.
No one was injured in the crash, which involved a Chevy Silverado driven by Tammy Hugus of Riverton at about 12:15 p.m. Tuesday.
Hugus, who was not injured in the incident, said she was heading east on Sunset Drive approaching Federal Boulevard when she hit an ice patch while maneuvering around a parked vehicle. Instead of swerving into oncoming traffic, she said she drove her truck onto the curb, striking the power pole. Witnesses said they could see sparks shooting into the air after the collision.
Emergency responders on the scene told Hugus to wait in her car until RMP employees could make sure no electricity was flowing in the area. Larry Elcock, customer and community manager for RMP said 2,400 customers were without power between 12:17 p.m. and 1:08 p.m. Tuesday.
"A car hit a pole, knocking some of the other phone and cable wires into our primary lines," Elcock said.
Traffic lights were disabled on Federal Boulevard because of the accident, and Riverton Police Department officers said their building had lost power as well. Residents at the Rendezvous Apartments wandered outside to watch the activity after their electricity went off, and witnesses said the nearby Walgreens store was dark, too. Employees at Trinity Lutheran School, almost a mile south of the incident, also said they went without power after the crash.
Hugus's vehicle sustained damage to the front passenger side where it seemingly struck the power pole. The rear driver's side door also was dented, but the vehicle was able to be driven from the scene.
