One easy win, one tough one for SHS girls

Jan 20, 2013 - By Randy Tucker, Sports Writer

Shoshoni picked up a pair of girls basketball wins in Big Horn County this weekend.

The Wrangler girls edged Rocky Mountain 43-38 on Friday, then survived a cold start to blow out Class 1-A Burlington on Saturday afternoon 52-31.

The Wranglers have a key Class 2-A Southwest matchup with Wind River this Friday at home.

The Wranglers were sluggish to start Saturday's game, and Burlington was poised to pull off the upset. Burlington built a 6-2 lead with only a pair of Olivia Thompson free throws breaking the ice in the first three minutes of the game.

Head coach Max Mills substituted Kiyana Martin, and points began to flow. Martin lit up the nets from the perimeter with four first-half treys and opened the offense for fellow sophomore Thompson in the paint.

The duo tallied nearly all of Shoshoni's first-half points and led the Wranglers on a 13-0 run in the late first and early second quarters that all but put the game away by halftime.

Martin tallied a rare four-point play with 5:51 left in the second when she hit a 3-pointer, was fouled on the shot, and converted the following free throw.

Leading 29-18 at the half, Thompson hit a driving layup to open the third period, then hit a jumper before Martin found her alone on the right baseline, and she converted a reverse layup.

Sarah Thompson repeated the play with a reverse layup of her own to open the final period and the Wranglers cruised to the win.

This was the third time Shoshoni easily beat Burlington this season.

It was close from start to finish on Friday, and Shoshoni nursed a 41-38 lead until the final seconds when a pair of Martin free throws put the game away for good with eight seconds remaining.
