Chief overpower league foes

Jan 20, 2013 - By Randy Tucker, Staff Writer

One of the most anticipated games of the Class 2-A seasons comes next Saturday, when Lovell travels to Ethete.

The Wyoming Indian Chiefs rolled over the Wind River range this weekend and took care of Class 2-A Southwest rivals Big Piney and Kemmerer in convincing fashion.

The Chiefs tallied a combined 47 points in the first and third periods Friday night and cruised to a 64-30 win over Kemmerer. On Saturday afternoon, the Chiefs broke open to a 30-7 lead in the second period and went on to crush Big Piney 60-39.

Kemmerer was never in the contest Friday night, as the Chiefs rolled to a huge early lead and steadily pulled away over the final three periods for the lopsided win.

Wyoming Indian's pressure was too much for Kemmerer's guards to handle, and when the game went to the half-court the Chiefs pounded away in the paint behind Joseph Howell and Trevor Williamson. The tall, talented, tandem finished with 11 and 17 points respectively. In a rare occurrence, the 6-5 Williamson also hit a trey.

Wilson Clifford had the hot hand in transition, tallying 19 to pace the Wyoming Indian effort.

Big Piney is a vastly improved team compared to the last three seasons. Junior Nolan Jones had 38 points the night before against Wind River but he tallied just a single point in the opening half as Williamson and Howell sandwiched him in the low post.

As a team the Punchers scored just a single first period basket.

"Our defense is looking pretty good but we need to work on our shooting," Wyoming Indian head coach Craig Ferris said.

One of the most anticipated games of the season comes next Saturday, when Lovell travels to Ethete. The Chiefs lost a close game to the Bulldogs in Lovell in their opening game but have reeled off 15 straight wins since and are now at full strength.
