RHS wrestlers win big over Laramie; Thon invite begins

Feb 1, 2013 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports Editor

Freshman Steven Reinig took 46 seconds in the 138-pound class before he pinned Bridger Rardin in his varsity wrestling debut to lift Riverton High School to a 52-22 victory over the Laramie Plainsmen Thursday night at Wolverine Gym.

Reinig had less than 24 hours to prepare for his match vs. the Plainsmen. He filled in for regular starter T.J. Turner, who was out sick for the dual.

"Steven did a tremendous job," RHS coach Jay Galey said. "He just keeps on getting better and better. He is not our regular 138-pounder. When we found out that Turner was sick, I had no reservations about throwing him in there because he is going to get after people. Steven knew what was coming. He responded how I thought he would. "

Riley Reichert at 220 pounds and Dawson Steeds in the heavyweight division won forfeit victories for RHS. The Wolverines were open at 113 pounds.

"I think that it was a good thing to have this because we got one behind us," Galey said. "Things will be a little more intense on Friday. We will have to wrestle better in certain spots."

The Wolverines started the early round matches Friday at the 40-team Ron Thon Invitational at Wolverine Gym.

The semifinals will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday. The finals will go around noon.

"The first thing that I want them to do is have fun at the Ron Thon," Galey said. "If they do that, then we are going to finish right where we want them to.

In the second period, Wempen scored a two-point reversal for a 6-0 lead.

Christensen scored a takedown in the third period to get on the scoreboard.

T.J. Galey was in control over Jerry Looney for a 12-4 win in the 170-pound class.
