Feb 1, 2013 - By Randy Tucker, Sports WriterPAVILLION -- On paper, it was a battle of the two leaders in the Western Conference with the Class 2-A Southwest frontrunner Wind River girls hosting Lovell out of the Northwest.
Reality doesn't always live up to the hype. Lovell demolished Wind River 72-34 in interleague action Thursday night at Pavillion.
Wind River played even with the visitors from the far north in the first and fourth periods but gave up 27 points in the middle.
Lovell opened with a 1-2-2 zone defense, and the Cougars took over three periods to figure out how to penetrate it. Wind River kept attacking with a single guard front and no high post for much of the game and it played directly into Lovell's hands.
The Cougars threw the ball away 21 times in the opening half, with many of those turnovers coming as they tried to pass through the zone to the low post.
The opening five minutes was an entertaining mix of outside shooting by the Bulldogs and power plays in the post by the Cougars that usually ended in free throws by Wind River.
The score was knotted at five and again at seven but Lovell never trailed in the contest and with under a minute left in the first they started a 10-0 run that finally ended with a Tory Thoman follow shot with 4:49 left in the half.
Amanda Shumway led the onslaught with six of the 10 points in the run. She finished the evening with 19 points to lead all scorers.
Lovell played without starter Kim Shumway, who suffered a severe bruise last Saturday at Ethete, but the Bulldogs didn't miss a beat as they rolled to a 33-17 lead at the break.
A nightmarish third period featured repeated turnovers by Wind River and athletic, transition play by Lovell.
Perhaps the best play of the game came when Lovell sophomore Lauren Hinckley took a pass in the low post, pirouetted in the air as she caught the ball, set her pivot foot, and turned back against the pass for an easy layup. She put an exclamation point on the period with an in-your-face 3-pointer with 1:31 remaining in the third that gave the Bulldogs a 57-23 lead.
The Cougars played their best basketball of the game in the final period behind layups from Shaylee Lonedog, Brett Groesbeck and Josee Vogel, but the margin was too great.
Lexus Brown paced the Cougars with nine points, and Vogel added eight.
After Shumway's 19, Chelsey Ellis scored 14 and Chayli MacArthur added 13.
Wind River hosts Class 1-A Dubois on Friday.
Lovell hosts Greybull on Friday, then travels over the mountain to play Big Horn on Saturday.
