Feb 5, 2013 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports EditorA five-game boys basketball road trip for Lander Valley High School has resulted in a five-game winning streak.
The LVHS Tigers beat Lyman 62-48 on Friday night. LVHS earned a 51-47 victory in overtime Saturday over Mountain View to complete the stretch.
LVHS is now 6-3 in conference play and 11-6 overall. The last setback for LVHS was 49-45 to Riverton High School on Jan. 8.
"Our team play is holding opponents under their scoring average," LVHS coach Terry Hopkin said.
The two wins put the Tigers in second in the Class 3-A West conference standings.
The Lyman Eagles entered the game Friday night against the Tigers as the No. 2 ranked team in 3-A.
LVHS took it right at Lyman from the start.
"We played three quarters as good as we have played all year," Hopkin said. "We couldn't feel good for very long as we had to start to think about Mountain View."
Lander's Jordan Crane paced the Tigers in the win with 18 points. Casey Winger scored 16. Lucas Watkins added 12 points for the balanced team.
In the Mountain View game, the team team was up 15-4 after the first quarter.
"Mountain View came out very hot shooting the basketball," Hopkin said.
After the slow start, Hopkin stressed the importance of taking it one possession at a time.
"We worked ourselves back into the game," Hopkin said.
In the overtime period, the Tigers outscored Mountain View 6-2 for the win.
Watkins had team-high honors at 16 points. Hunter Bregar scored 10 points, and Winger finished with eight. Crane ended with seven.
"We have played well on the road," Hopkin said.
LVHS will finish the regular season with five consecutive home games.
"To be at home and in your own bed means a lot," Hopkin said.
The home stand starts at 7 p.m. Friday when the top-ranked Star Valley Braves make a visit to Bob Carey Memorial Fieldhouse in Lander.
"We need to handle the press first and foremost," Hopkin said.
