Lander boys lose to No. 1 Star Valley, beat Jackson 43-36

Feb 10, 2013 - By Bruce Tippets, Sports Editor

Lander Valley High School wasted little time getting back on the winning track Saturday in a 43-36 win against Jackson at Bob Carey Memorial Fieldhouse.

In the seven-point victory, Lander's Casey Winger scored 10 points.

He was 4-4 from the free throw line in the final period.

Teammate Lucas Watkins and Jess Oldham had eight points apiece for the Tiger boys.

Star Valley hit important free throws down the stretch to escape with a 40-32 victory Friday night vs. LVHS to begin the weekend.

The Tigers entered the weekend ranked as the No. 4 team in Class 3-A. Star Valley is the top-ranked team and hasn't lost in conference play.

LVHS was riding a six-game winning streak before the loss to the Braves.

"Defensively, we really played hard," LVHS coach Terry Hopkin said.

"We held a very good Star Valley team to its lowest point total of the year, but on the other side, we just didn't shoot the ball really well. We had a lot of point-blank shots that didn't go in."

The win completed the season sweep for Star Valley over the Tigers.

"We didn't get blown out," Hopkin said.

"The kids are getting better.

When you play as hard as we did, good things can happen."

LVHS plays Cody this Friday night in another Class 3-A West conference game at the fieldhouse.

Late in the third quarter Friday night in the 3-A showcase game of the week, Lander's Hunter Bregar ended the period with a 3-pointer to make the scoreboard read 30-25.

Bregar opened the final period on his second 3-pointer of the game to pull the Tigers to within 30-28.

After not being whistled for a foul in the third period, Lander's Jess Oldham was called for the first foul of the second half for the home squad with four minutes left in regulation.

LVHS bench player Cooxoocii Black kept it a two-point game at 32-30 with 56 seconds remaining.

"When it was a two-point game, anything can happen," Hopkin said. "I was hoping for a steal or a great defensive stand. We didn't get it. We had to go to the fouls."

Star Valley was perfect from the charity stripe in the final seconds of play to hold on for the victory. Austin Valentine, Dalton Passey and Byron Anderson hit two free throws apiece for the visiting team.

"Star Valley stood up and made the free throws," Hopkin said. "They did what they needed to do to win it."

Star Valley has eight seniors on its roster this year.

Senior Wyatt Shinaver had team-high honors at 14 points.

"A lot of those seniors played last year as juniors," Hopkin said. "They have a lot of experience. They know what is going down. They know how to handle things, but we were right there with them. We are starting to handle the situations and the pressure."

Watkins led LVHS with 13 points. Bregar hit seven points.

"I thought that we did a better job with our press breaker," Hopkin said.

"We had a couple of mistakes, but we had some great offensive rebounding.

We just didn't get the put backs. We had a chance. It just didn't happen."
