Wolverine girls thrashed by conference-leading Natrona

Feb 15, 2013 - By Craig Blumenshine, Staff Writer

The Riverton Wolverine girls basketball team looked confident in the beginning of Thursday's Class 4-A West matchup against league-leading Casper Natrona. Senior Bree Olson's bucket and sophomore Kiley Ridgway's two free throws had the Lady Wolverines up 4-2 with 6:50 left in the first quarter.

But Riverton's confidence faded quickly.

"Their defensive pressure is pretty intense, and it got to us. We didn't handle it very well," RHS head Lady Wolverine basketball coach Ron Porter said.

In fact, Riverton didn't score again until the third quarter, and the Natrona Fillies continued their domination of Class 4-A West teams with a 54-17 blowout over RHS in a game played in Rustler Gym at Central Wyoming College.

"They are a good team, but I thought we made them look better than they are. The essence of the weight room is pretty apparent," Porter said.

NC's Kaylee Johnson, the state scoring leader, led all scorers with 25 despite missing eight free throws.

The Lady Wolverines will now set their sites on their final three conference games, the first of which is Saturday at Casper Kelly Walsh.

"There are a couple of things that we can do better that don't take a lot of athleticism, but take a little heart. Now we play the four most important games that we have played in the last few years," Porter said.

Saturday's tipoff at Kelly Walsh is set for 5:45 p.m. The Wolverines will be trying to avenge their 51-48 heartbreaking triple-overtime loss earlier this year to the Lady Trojans.
