Feb 18, 2013 - By Craig Blumenshine, Staff WriterPAVILLION -- The Wind River Lady Cougars fell behind early, pulled out to what seemed to be a comfortable lead late, but had to survive a ferocious final minute comeback to beat the Wyoming Indian Lady Chiefs 70-64 Friday night in Pavillion.
Wind River's Lexi Brown led all scorers with 23 points and converted 12 of 13 second-half free throws. Josee Vogel added 19 for the Lady Cougars.
"You gotta love the excitement. It took a little time for us. We had a little gut check at halftime," Wind River head coach Justin Walker said.
It worked. After the Lady Cougars gave up 20 second-quarter points and trailed 36-26 at halftime, they outscored Wyoming Indian 22-7 in the third quarter to take the lead.
Ahead by three with 3:50 left to play, Wind River surged late with a bucket from Alexi Wagon, two Vogel free throws, and five charities from Brown. With 1:36 left in the game, Wind River was up 67-55.
But the game was far from over.
After a WIHS timeout, freshman Alyssa Trosper nailed a 3-pointer and added two more field goals after consecutive steals. Brindi Lock also converted a layup, and with 38 seconds remaining, the Lady Chiefs had cut the lead 67-64.
In the final seconds, Amanda C'Bearing hit one of two free throws to extend the Wind River lead, and Brown added two more to give Wind River the win.
"We didn't handle their pressure well, and we got into foul trouble. I was really proud of our bench and our freshmen. They had to come in and they came through," WIHS coach Aleta Moss said.
Southwest conference champion Wind River likely will open against Greybull and, after the loss, the Lady Chiefs, who will end the regular season with a 4-4 record and in third place in the Southwest, will open Thursday at 2 p.m. against Rocky Mountain, the second seed from the Northwest when the Class 2-A West regional tournament opens Thursday in Riverton.
