Wolverines get 21st win in 67-30 rout of Green River Wolves

Feb 20, 2013 - By Craig Blumenshine, Staff Writer

Playing in the final home game of the year, the Riverton High School boys basketball team easily won its 21st game of the season crushing the Green River Wolves 67-30 Tuesday evening in Wolverine Gym.

The win, Riverton's eighth conference victory with just one league loss, sets up a big game in Evanston Saturday against the Red Devils who are 6-2 in conference play. Evanston plays Rock Springs Friday night before hosting the Wolverines. A win for RHS secures the conference championship and top seed at next week's Class 4-A West regional. Riverton already has qualified automatically for the state tournament.

Seth Quayle led Riverton's balanced scoring attack with 13 points. Four others reached double figures, Kade Salisbury with 12 points, and Jordan Belville, Myron Oldman and Xavier Webb with 10 points each.

Quayle and Salisbury also pulled down 10 rebounds each, despite playing fewer minutes because of their team's lead.

"Nobody got hurt, and we got the win. We played some young kids, and they played hard," RHS head coach Dick Quayle said after the game.

Tuesday's game had a festive feel as it was the seniors' final home game in Wolverine Gym.

Senior Michael Johnston's two-handed, rim-hanging dunk with 1:10 left in the third quarter started 17-2 Wolverine run that blew the game open.

Now the Wolverines will begin to play each remaining game as though it will be the final game of the year.

"I think our Evanston game needs to feel like our first tournament game," Quayle said, hoping that his team will begin to ramp up effort and intensity even more and understanding that a tough Gillette team, which beat Riverton easily earlier this year, will be doing the same in the 4-A East conference.

Riverton's game at Evanston is set to tip off at 4 p.m.
