Wagner opera coming to Lander

Feb 24, 2013 - From staff reports

Lander Met Opera will bring its next presentation in the 2012-13 season of performances from the Metropolitan Opera to the Lander Library at 10 a.m. March 2.

"Parsifal," the last and most complex of Richard Wagner's operas, is a re-creation of the story of the Holy Grail.

The pursuit of the Holy Grail by one of King Arthur's knights, Percival, in this case Parsifal, is recounted both in the British Arthurian legend and in those in France and Germany. In Wagner's hands it becomes a complex metaphor for sin and redemption that has puzzled and engaged audiences since its first performance in Bayreuth in 1883.

It is a long opera that challenges the singers, orchestra and audience for five hours. However, despite the challenges it may present to viewers, this will be a rare opportunity to hear this seldom-performed masterpiece.

The cast of singers includes Jonas Kaufman, Rene Pape, Peter Mattei and Katarina Dalayman all of whom won high praise from critics following the premier at the Metropolitan Opera this month.
