CASPER -- It was a rollercoaster of an opening-round contest between the St. Stephen's Eagles and the Kaycee Buckaroos in Class 1-A boys action at the Casper Events Center. The state-tournament opener featured 18 ties or lead changes before Kaycee took control late to win the game 74-68.

Kaycee advanced to a 7:30 p.m. semifinal game against Ten Sleep at Casper College, while the Eagles played Guernsey-Sunrise in a loser-out game Friday afternoon at Casper College.

The 68 points for St. Stephen's came primarily from just two players. Cole Littleshield let all scorers with 33 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, while Lakota Oldman poured in 20 with perfect 7-7 shooting from the free-throw line.

St. Stephen's led early, but the 1-A East champs clawed back into the contest and tied the game for the first time at 10 on Markus Koch follow shot. The lead seesawed through the final 3:52 of the first. Sam Teran knotted the game again at 17 on a follow shot just 27 seconds into the second quarter.

Kaycee led by four to six points for much of the second period, but the Eagles had the chance to regain momentum when Littleshield took a charge from James Caro with 24 seconds left in the half. But the Eagles couldn't convert, and Kaycee's Brandon Tehau beat the buzzer with a layup to give the Buckaroos a 37-31 lead at the half.

Mathew Tehau hit a basket to open the third for Kaycee, but St. Stephen's rolled on an 8-0 run to tie the game at 39 with 4:11 remaining in the third.

Oldman and Littleshield held off Kaycee for a few more minutes, but Tehau tied the game at 46. After the Buckaroos led by as many as five points, Oldman hit a trey with 6:25 left in the game to close it to two and added a pair of free throws with 4:53 left to tie game a final time at 57.

A high flying assist from Oldman to Littleshield closed the game to 67-65 with 1:44 left. Littleshield hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer for the final 74-68 score.
